First Year Teaching: When Parents Doubt Your Teaching Ability
As this is your first year teaching, you will have to learn the ropes as you go. You may have an idea of what to expect but there are always surprises just around the corner. In your first year of teaching, you may realize that this will be the hardest year to get though and the rest of the years will flow a lot smoother.
Don’t be afraid or surprised when you find that you will have a few parents who doubt your teaching ability only because this is your first year in the teaching system. This is to be expected, so don’t panic or take it personally. You are teaching their children and they want to make sure that you are capable of teaching them everything they need to know. In this situation, put yourself in the parent’s shoes and think about how you would feel and what you would do.
As a teacher, you will have a lot to prove but it’s nothing too major. To assure parents that you are well aware of what is going on in the teaching situation, especially in your classroom, have lesson plans prepared at PTA meetings and other events. To avoid future issues and doubts, host a meeting of your own in your classroom and review what you the students will be learning in the year to come. It will be something similar to getting to know your students on the first day of school.
It is very important that you make the parents feel welcomed and that their children are in good hands. Introduce yourself and provide a little bit of background information that will include where you attended college, when you graduated and your personal grading system that will be applied in your classroom. It is also a good idea to give the parents a chance to introduce themselves as well and tell a little bit about themselves.Related Article : How would classrooms be different if teachers came to class not with a lesson plan, but with a concept?
